Communication Theory Mini Conference Globecom 97 Towards Optimality in Constellation Labeling Richard D. Wesel, Christos Komninakis, and Xueting Liu University of California, Los Angeles, CA 90095-1594 Abstract Robust trellis codes that perform well on channels with severe, correlated fading require low rates and do not employ uncoded (pass-through) bits. For this trellis code design problem, neither Gray-coding or set-partitioning is well motivated. We propose a new approach to constellation labeling and provide a low-rate 32-QAM trellis code design example to show how the new approach can provide improved metrics at low rates.

Isogeometric Topology Optimization by Using Optimality Criteria and Implicit Function

A new method for structural topology optimization is introduced which employs the Isogeometric Analysis (IA) method. In this approach, an implicit function is constructed over the whole domain by Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline (NURBS) basis functions which are also used for creating the geometry and the surface of solution of the elasticity problem. Inspiration of the level set method zero level...

Pro le Optimal 8 - QAM and 32 - QAM Constellations

For low-rate trellis codes that do not utilize uncoded bits, a new approach to constellation labeling which maximizes the constellation edge proole can provide improved metrics. We investigate the edge proole optimality for 8-QAM and 32-QAM constellations. The labeling structures that achieve the optimal edge prooles for 8-QAM and 32-QAM are presented. Explicit proofs of the optimal edge proole...

Performance of combined constellation shaping and bit interleaved coded modulation with iterative decoding (BICM-ID)

The increasing demand of achieving high data rates in modern communication systems requires highly efficient bandwidth utilization. For this purpose, multilevel modulation schemes are used in association with forward error correction (FEC) codes in order to approach the channel capacity. However, there is a gap between the capacity of a uniform signal constellation and the Shannon unconstrained...

Generalizing Linear Real-Field Codes for Fading Channels

| We derive generalized analytical constructions of linear realeld (LRF) codes for transmissions over wireless fading channels. We show cases where LRF-coded QAM, PAM, or PSK constellations can achieve maximum diversity and large coding gains. We construct analytically LRF codes, which not only yield larger coding gains than existing designs in most cases, but also produce LRF-coded QAM or PAM ...

Theoretic Practice

Important issues for coded modulation in practice are derived from information theoretic parameters. Optimality of multilevel coding as well as various rules to assign rates to the individual component codes are discussed. Moreover, suitable dimensionality of signal constellation used for coding is considered. All phenomena predicted from information theory are con rmed by simulation results. F...
